From what I’ve gathered from forums etc. the best beginner brands are Citronic or Numark. Having only looked up their products online they seem quite reasonable.
Is there any particular product between these two brands or even another brand or approach for a beginner like myself?

numark offers the best of both worlds: vinyl turntables with USB ports. check out the TTXUSB (http://www.numark.com/ttxusb) and the more basic/stripped-down TTUSB (http://www.numark.com/ttusb)
this way you can digitize your vinyl collection as well as utilize the turntables. hope that helps!
