Best Place To Rent DJ Equipment In NYC – A Guide…
New York is home to more than 100 rental houses renting DJ Equipment. But where do I go? Who do I trust? What do I rent? What if something happens? How do I connect it all?
These are all good questions to ask, unfortunately, most places can’t answer them.
Where Do I Go To Rent DJ Equipment?
Find a company who has a history serving your area. For me, it’s New York City. I have the pick of the litter, so look around. Google DJ Equipment Rental in your specific town. I googled “DJ Equipment Rental NYC”, and came up with 20+ pages of results. See how long a company has been in business. Find out about their return policy. Ask what kind of security deposit is required to rent the DJ Equipment. Do they offer 3rd party rental insurance? What are their hours and locations for pick up?
What Do I Rent?
With so many DJ products on the market, what do I rent? Ask your DJ what he or she needs? Most will need at the minimum (2) Technics SL1200MK2 Turntables or (2) Pioneer CDJ1000MK3 CD Players, (1) DJ Mixer, and some powered speakers. Your DJ might also need a monitor, but most can get by without. In regards to the speakers, it all depends on how big your event is going to be, how many people will be attending, and the size of your space. The bigger the event, the bigger the speakers, and maybe even a powered subwoofer or two might be needed. A good rental house will walk you through selecting the right equipment without taking advantage of your situation. Most companies will ask the same questions that are being asked here to determine your requirements.
What If Something Happens?
A good rental company will have technical support available at all times. If they don’t, find out their operating hours, and also find out their support options. You’ll find this is where MOST companies fail. Being in the event’s business, I’ve learned the hard way, that things can happen at the worst possible moment – Murphy’s Law. A good rental company will have a support system in place to accommodate just about any situation. But most importantly, this should cost you any extra. When you pick up your equipment, as them to show you how to use it, and if possible, ask them to plug it in and make sure everything works properly.
How Does It All Work?
DJ Equipment, and in general, any electronic equipment can be a little tricky to set up, especially if you don’t have experience and are pressed for time because your event requires other details to be finalized. For this reason also ask about set up and delivery options. Although an added expense, it could save you a lot more in the end with time and whether or not your event goes off without a hitch. If you let a professional handle the delivery, set up, and testing of your equipment, that’s just one less thing to worry about on the day of your event. Before the technician leaves, make sure he does a test with you and gives you a brief overview of what he did and how it all works. Your DJ should know how it will all function, but it’s still good to have an idea of how it all ties in. Make sure they can guarantee on time arrival AND pick up. Especially if your event is being held at an outside facility which you’ve rented and don’t have the luxury of leaving things overnight. Unfortunately, some companies will charge you for late night pick ups, but it’s understandable and well worth it.
The most important thing is that you should feel comfortable with the company you are renting equipment from – ask them about their return policy, and again, ask about their support system. Choose a company that has a history and proven track record for renting DJ Equipment in your area.

In my new role, as Associate Representative , on the board of BSPI (Bridal Show Producers International) , I have a resurgent interest in the relationship between show producers, exhibitors/advertisers, and the bride. One of the prime directives for BSPI is to be an organization for ethical and competent bridal show producers… to promote high standards in the wedding wndustry. Having exhibited at close to 100 bridal shows, during my life as a DJ, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly.
